Awareness Raising through Community Mobilization & BCC

This project is mainly focused on increasing the awareness of the community about health hygiene, family planning, water born infection and changing their behavior about open defecation in different upazilas of Sylhet and Chattogram divisions.

Shimantik has initiated to implement some awareness activities through different projects which as follows:

Marketing Innovations for Sustainable Health Development MISHD Project:

The goal of the project is to contribute to sustained improvements in the health status of women, children, and families in Bangladesh by increasing access to and demand for essential health products and services, using social marketing tools and concepts through the private sector. The Shimantik Implemented Marketing Innovation for Health (MIH) project successfully from 2012 to 2016 with the support of USAID and Social Marketing Company (SMC). Later on Shimantik is being implementing community mobilization program which branding name is NotunDin, it was started in Dec 2016 to till now, from that journey Shimantik covering in 29 Upazila where Sylhet Division carries on 23 Upazilas and the remaining 6 Upazilas under Brahmmanbaria district. Additionally, Dhaka and Chittagong urban is covering (3+3) = 6 wards consecutively from December 2021.

 

Shimantik is covering different types of models as per following SMC guideline right now. Shimantik is implementing total 29 upazila follwing four types of model in our intervention area. No of 16 upazila are Model-1, No of 06 upazila are in Model-2, No of  05 Upazila are in Model-3. From December 2021 remaining 02 upazila are in  Model-4.

Dhaka and Chittagong 06 Community Mobilization Officer (CMO) will cover 06 ward, they will conduct group meeting, adolescent health session, newly-wed, awareness program on nutrition etc. The CMOs will develop and functioning number of 30 of GSMs in the intervention area.

During July 2021 to May 2022 the project has done the following activities:

MWRA & Care giver Meeting:

MWRA & Caregiver meeting is a very important indicator for increase care seeking practice and reduce harmful practice in community level. In MWRA & CG group it is not only important to increase knowledge but also increase their practice also. We conducted MWRA & CG meeting with the targeted people by using audio player and flip charts on HTSP, first thousand days & others indicator. During this period, a total 1,66,888 MWRAs & 70,377 Caregivers were reached at the community level.

IPC with Newlywed couple:

The Couple whose marriage life is less than one year is treated as newlywed couple. To increase knowledge on family planning method and maintain healthy behavior throughout the conjugal life cycle our community mobilizer provide message to an individual couple on HTSP, first 1000 days and Monimix by using flipchart and after the session provide key ring as prize those couple. Basically, by conducting IPC with Husband and wife together to disseminate message.

During this period total 1,418 couples were reached through 1,418 sessions in the community level.

Ma Shomabesh:

To aware child nutrition for under 5 year’s children, we have taken an initiative to conduct special meeting with mother who have under 5 years of age they participated in Ma Shomabesh, around 4226 number of mother was attend in the 324 meeting. We focus on exclusive breastfeeding, how to the mother feeding their breast feeding in their daily practice, after 6 month of age extra food are required for maintaining baby`s physical and mental development, beyond this food behavior most of the mothers not maintain adequate nutrition in daily feeding. So micronutrient powder like MoniMix is required for each and every children. In this session we also discussed about MoniMix how they feed and maintain the dosages schedule. Most of mothers were become self-motivated and purchase one or two packet of MoniMix during the session. GSM, FS was present in the meeting. Finally, we have provided Bowl & Spoon for each and every participants for recall the brand name of MoniMix and maintain the care seeking practice for their child.

School Health Session with Adolescent Boys and Girls:

To increase care seeking practice and reduce harmful attitude through by awareness on healthy behavior in school going student by the Notun Din employees and as well as non-school going boys and girls by the support of ambassador.

We have arranged school health session with school going boys and girls. The Session was conducted by respective Field supervisor or Community Mobilizer with 50 students. A total of 33,023 school boys and girls were reached with the adolescent’s health message by Notun Din staff. Among them 4,708 were boys and 28,315 were girls. A quiz competition was held during the session in each School, Madrasa and college to generate attention and interest of the boys and girls for message retention.

Product Received from SMC and distribution among GSM:

We received product according to the requisition of the GSM and after receiving from SMC we discriminate it among GSM to fulfill the demand of the community. During the period we have received from SMC and distributed among the GSM total 72 million which was BDT. 71,811,105

Food stuff distributed at flood affected upazila under MISHD

During this period a flood disaster was occurred in our intervention area. 359 GSMs was affected by flood disaster. SMC distributed food stuff among flood affected GSMs.

SMC top management team (Mr. Moshiur Rahman, Additional Genaral Manager, Program Operation, Mr. Mohiuddin Head of BCC, Mr. Rezaul Hoque Sr. Manager, Mr.Bahauddin Sales Manager) has visited Golapgonj and Fenchugonj Upz. Under Sylhet district for food stuff distribution among the Gold Star Members due to flood affect.

Moreover, they also visited PHQ-NotunDin office and others infrastructure of Shimantik. SMC management has appreciated activities of Shimantik to the national level considering health issues.

GSM Community Mobilization Program Cox’s Bazar:

Shimantik started implementing GSM Community Mobilization Program in Cox;sbazar district of Chottagram division with the support of Social Marketing Company (SMC) from July 2019. Being a partner organization Shimantik has been implementing The USAID Marketing Innovations for Sustainable Health Development (MISHD) project in 29 upazilla of Sylhet, Sunamgonj, Moulvibazar, Hobigonj and Brahmmanbaria districts since November, 2016. With the long experience of community Mobilization Program and lesson learned of MISHD project Shimantik has been explored GSM Community Mobilization Program in Cox’s bazar.

Working Area/Catchments Brief:

Shimantik covered four upazila of Cox’sbazar district of  Chattagram Division to implement community mobilization activities under GSM Community Mobilization Program.

Activity wise Progress for the reporting period (July, 2021- May 2022):

  1. MWRA coverage through group Meeting :

MWRA & Caregiver meeting is a very important indicator for increase care seeking practice and reduce harmful practice in community level. In MWRA & CG group it is not only important to increase knowledge but also increase their care seeking practice. We have conducted MWRA & CG meeting to the targeted people by using audio player and flip charts on HTSP, first 1000 days & others indicator. During this period, total 50,889 MWRAs & 25,575 Caregivers were reached through 3861 group meetings at the community level which is 93% of its annual targets both indicators.

  1. IPC (Counselling) with Newlywed Couple-

The Couple whose marriage life is less than one year is treated as newlywed couple. To increase knowledge on family planning method and maintain healthy behavior throughout the conjugal life cycle our community mobilizer provide message to an individual couple on HTSP, First 1000 days by using flipchart. During the reporting period we have conducted 563 IPC with newlywed couple which is 94% of its annual targets.

  1. Advocacy Meeting with Community Influential at Upazila and Union level:

As a regular activity of GSM Community Mobilization project we have conducted advocacy meeting with community level influential such as local elected representative, local leaders, teachers, health & FP field staff, religious leaders inform & support about Community Mobilization Program. In total, 49 advocacy meetings were held with the attendance of 933 participants.

  1. School Health Session with Adolescents:

 To increase care seeking practice and reduce harmful attitude through by awareness on healthy behavior in school following session has been conducted by the GSM community Mobilization Program employees. In this reporting period we have covered 10,086 adolescent through 592 school health session and community level adolescent health session which is 96% of its annual targets.

Urban GSM Community Mobilization Program Dhaka City Corporation:

Shimantik is being implementing an innovative community mobilization program which named is Urban GSM Initiatives under Community Mobilization Program, supported by Social Marketing Company. The project has started from January 20, 2021 for 11 months duration. Shimantik has been implementing same community mobilization program in 29 upazilas of five separate districts under USAID funded MISHD project and four upazilas of Cox’sbazar district by SMC own funded. Based on these experiences, SMC has provided their support to implement same initiatives in urban areas of Dhaka City Corporation. So, currently Shimantik has been covering 03 clusters/wards of Dhaka city corporation areas. This urban GSM community mobilization has two components, one is community mobilization and another one is to develop and functioning Gold Star Members being an entrepreneur. Through the community mobilization activities, the community mobilization officer (CMO) and GSM`s disseminate messages on four core heath packages mostly to urban & peri-urban women and garments/factory worker mostly female workers. The information packages contain messages on Healthy Timing & Spacing of Pregnancy (HTSP), The First 1,000 Days Care, Adolescent Health and TB Prevention and Management.

In MWRA & CG group it is not only important to increase knowledge but also increase their care seeking practice. We have conducted MWRA & CG meeting to the targeted people by using audio player and flip charts on HTSP, first 1000 days & others indicator. During this period, total 13195 MWRAs & 4195 Caregivers were reached through 794 group meetings at the community level which is 115% and 93 % of its annual targets respectively.

IPC (Counselling) with Newlywed Couple:

The Couple whose marriage life is less than one year is treated as newlywed couple. To increase knowledge on family planning method and maintain healthy behavior throughout the conjugal life cycle our community mobilizer provide message to an individual couple on HTSP, First 1000 days and Monimix by using flipchart. During the reporting period we have conducted 186 IPC with newlywed couple which is 113% of its annual targets.

Advocacy Meeting with Community Influential at Upazila and Union level:

As a regular activity of GSM Community Mobilization project we have conducted advocacy meeting with community level influential such as local elected representative, local leaders, teachers, health & FP field staff, religious leaders inform & support about Community Mobilization Program. In total, 3 advocacy meetings were held with the attendance of 72 participants.

School Health Session with Adolescents:

To increase care seeking practice and reduce harmful attitude through by awareness on healthy behavior in school following session has been conducted by the GSM community Mobilization Program employees. In this reporting period we have covered 8354 adolescent through school health session and community level adolescent health session which is 118% of its annual targets.

Shimantik, a national non-government organization in Bangladesh, established in 1979. Shimantik is dully registered with the Social Service Department [Syl-7(221)/84, dated 16 May 1984] and NGO Affairs Bureau (Registration no.298 dated 28 May 1989), Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), Directorate General of Family Planning (DGFP).
